#issue28 #merrychristmas #happynewyear #term2 #2021
It is a little over a week since we went on break for the Christmas holidays. We are hoping you all are getting rest, leisure, and family time. Recently we learned of a new strain of COVID-19 circulating in the United Kingdom. Please be vigilant in any travels community members take.
Some of the activities we did during the last few weeks of school included writing general letters to kids in Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for Life USA and Tanzanian Assemblies here in Zanzibar. We also made some holiday themed art. Recently we mailed those letters and holiday themed art. We received confirmation that the letters were well received. Hopefully by the time school starts we will have replies.
During the school break, please take some time with students and go over the exercises that were sent home in their envelopes. Return completed work on the first day of school. Additionally, during the break we would like for students to collect plastic bottle tops of items they use. In addition to the bottle tops, we are asking that students collect sea shells if they go to the beach. We are working our way to the 100th Day of school on February 11. Each student DOES NOT need to collect 100 items. Our sum as a group should make it to 100.
The new school term 2 starts on January 4, 2021. There are slight changes to the school daily schedule. We have added a short handwriting and reading block. This block is meant for students to have dedicated time to practice penmanship, and reading comprehension. We have also expanded on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Globally STEAM has morphed from STEM to STEAM, and is now transitioning to STREAM. The added ‘r’ stands for reading and the ‘e’ now includes English in addition to engineering. What this means for us is that students will still do experiments, but we will add more math types of activities and presenting during the new STREAM session. Lastly, gym and PHSE are combined this term. Please wear your gym uniforms on Mondays and Wednesday.
